Bulky item removal in Singapore: getting rid of old furniture when you move
Bulky item removal in Singapore: free town council collection for HDB residents, what's excluded, and other ways to sell, donate or recycle.
Updated 2 min read

Moving is the best time to let go of furniture and appliances you no longer need, and bulky item removal is easier than many people think. It also makes your move cheaper, because there's less to carry. Here are the main options, from free to paid.
1. Town council bulky item removal (HDB residents)
Most HDB town councils run a bulky item removal service for residents. From the published terms of several town councils:
- It's typically free for a limited number of items per household each month (often three), with extra items charged.
- You usually need to book in advance, sometimes a few working days ahead.
- Collection happens at set times, and you may be asked to put items outside your unit only on the day.
- Common exclusions: renovation debris, built-in fixtures (kitchen cabinets, built-in wardrobes) and very large items such as pianos. Some councils ask you to dismantle large furniture first.
Terms differ, so check your own town council's website or hotline. Book early: before a move you may want more than one month's allowance.
2. Sell or give away
Furniture and appliances in good condition can find a new home through online marketplaces, community groups, or friends and neighbours. Start two to four weeks before the move, so buyers have time to collect.
3. Donate
Charities and community organisations accept some items, especially clothes, books and small household goods. Check what each accepts before you drop anything off.
4. Recycle
- Electronics: Singapore has an e-waste collection system with collection points and retailer take-back for many electrical and electronic items.
- Paper, plastic, metal and glass: use the blue recycling bins.
NEA's website lists the recycling options.
5. Ask your mover
Many movers offer disposal as an add-on, priced per item or per trip. It's convenient for items the town council won't take, or when you're short on time. Ask for the price when you request quotes, so it's written into the quote. See how much movers cost.
A simple plan
- Six weeks out: list what's going and what's staying.
- Four weeks out: list items for sale or giveaway.
- Two to three weeks out: book town council removal for what's left.
- Moving day: the mover takes anything remaining, if agreed in the quote.
Then pack what's left with our packing guide, and get quotes from movers in Jurong West, Ang Mo Kio or your area.
